Frequently Asked Questions
What are your boxes made of?
Our boxes are made from bagasse, the fibrous residue left after sugar is extracted from sugarcane, and selected product lines also use wheat straw or a blended plant fibre. None of our moulded pulp uses wood pulp. Because bagasse and wheat straw are renewable crop by-products, the material is compostable after use rather than petroleum-based. We do not apply plastic, wax, or PE lamination to these ranges. For the exact material of a specific item, check its product page or browse our Plates & Trays and Bowls & Containers categories.
Are the boxes truly compostable? Home or industrial?
Yes, they are compostable, but only under industrial composting conditions. In a managed facility with sustained heat and active microbes, our bagasse and plant-fibre boxes break down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass without leaving plastic residue. Home composting is much slower and often will not finish within a single season because backyard piles rarely reach the required temperature. They should not be treated as ‘biodegradable’ in a landfill, since breakdown depends entirely on the facility. We recommend industrial composting where local infrastructure exists. Test references are available on request.
Are they PFAS-free?
We produce our boxes without intentionally added PFAS, and test reports are available on request. We do not use PFAS-containing coatings in our standard bagasse and plant-fibre ranges. Because trace environmental background cannot be fully excluded, we describe the products as produced without intentionally added PFAS rather than making an absolute zero-PFAS claim. If your tender, retailer, or regulation requires documentary evidence, contact us and we will share the relevant third-party test reports for the specific product and batch you are buying.
Are they microwave-safe? What temperature?
Yes, they are microwave-safe for short reheating. The material stays stable from -18 °C in the freezer up to about +120 °C for brief microwave reheating of 2 to 3 minutes. You can move a box straight from the freezer to the microwave without thawing first. They are not suitable for conventional ovens, and they should not be used for prolonged high-temperature holding or placed on a stovetop. For very oily or high-sugar foods at maximum heat, keep reheating brief to avoid softening the base or edges of the container.
Are they freezer and fridge safe?
Yes. Our bagasse and plant-fibre boxes are safe in both the freezer and the refrigerator. They remain stable from -18 °C in the freezer through normal fridge temperatures, and they do not become brittle or leak when frozen. Because they tolerate the full cold-to-hot range, you can freeze a prepared meal and later reheat it in the same box in the microwave. Avoid overfilling with liquid before freezing, and use a matching lid to limit freezer burn and odour transfer from other foods.
Are they greaseproof and leakproof?
Yes. The dense moulded-pulp wall is naturally grease-resistant and holds saucy or soupy meals without soaking through to the outside. For hot soups and broth we recommend a matching lid to control splashing and retain heat. They perform well with curries, pasta, dressings, and similar wet foods in normal service. For extreme, long-duration liquid loads such as thin broth held for hours, we suggest a short small-batch test with your actual menu before full adoption, since very wet conditions can eventually soften the base over time.
What is the difference between bagasse, wheat straw, and plant fibre?
Bagasse is sugarcane-fibre pulp: stiff, light beige, and our default for plates and clamshells. Wheat straw pulp uses agricultural straw residue, giving a slightly lighter colour and comparable rigidity at a different cost point, used on selected lines. ‘Plant fibre’ denotes a blended bamboo-and-bagasse mix with a smoother surface, suited to premium tableware. All three are renewable and compostable; the choice comes down to colour, rigidity, and budget. See Plates & Trays for bagasse, Bowls & Containers for blended options, and our Clamshells & Takeaway range for takeaway formats.
Do you sell lids separately?
Yes. Lids are offered as independent SKUs with their own pricing, and they are not bundled with the boxes. We stock lids matched to our cup, bowl, and clamshell ranges so you can order exactly the quantity and combination you need. Mixing lid and base from different suppliers is not recommended, because rim dimensions and fit vary between manufacturers. If you are building a custom set, tell us the base model and we will quote the compatible lid separately. Volume pricing applies per lid SKU at the same tiered structure as the bases.
What sizes and compartments do you offer?
We cover the common takeaway and meal-prep formats: 9-inch five-compartment trays, 8-inch and 7-inch three-compartment clamshells, 750 ml soup containers, 6-inch burger boxes, 600 ml and 9×6-inch hinged boxes, plus four-compartment meal trays. Compartment counts and depths vary by line, so exact dimensions are listed on each product page. For the full current catalogue, browse our product categories, Plates & Trays, Bowls & Containers, and Clamshells & Takeaway, or request the specification sheet tailored to your target market and portion size.
Are the boxes sturdy enough for delivery?
Yes. The rigid moulded-pulp wall is stronger under top-load stacking than thin plastic takeaway tubs of the same weight class, and it resists crushing inside delivery bags and courier totes. Corner and rim design keeps the shape stable when stacked several layers high. They suit food delivery and catering distribution, though very heavy or sharp-edged items should still be packed with care. For long-haul shipping we recommend the clamshell styles with secure hinges. Sample a few formats under your real stacking and transit conditions before scaling the order to a full container.
What is the MOQ for blank boxes versus custom printed?
Blank, unprinted boxes have flexible minimums and are often viable at a few cartons, which suits small restaurants and first trial orders. Fully custom full-colour printed boxes start from 5,000 pieces per design, because printing requires plate setup and a dedicated production run. A single printed design across several compatible sizes can sometimes share tooling, lowering the effective per-size minimum, so confirm with us. For container loads we offer both FCL and LCL options. The exact MOQ depends on the product shape, so tell us the item and we will quote the real minimum.
How does custom printing work?
Custom printing is applied directly onto the box surface using food-safe, full-colour print, not stickers and not a plastic lamination film. You can specify your logo, brand colours, and seasonal or promotional artwork. We first send a digital proof for your approval, then produce only after you sign off, which avoids colour or layout surprises. Printed runs follow the 5,000-piece minimum and add plate-making time to the lead time. Provide artwork as AI, PDF, or SVG. For regulated markets we keep prints within compliant, food-contact-safe inks, and we share the relevant documentation on request.
How can I get samples?
Samples are free of charge, and you may select up to 15 different styles to evaluate material, weight, and fit. International express shipping with DHL or FedEx is paid by the customer, either as freight collect using your own carrier account or prepaid by us and added to the sample invoice. If any sample fee applies, it is fully deducted from your first confirmed order. To request, email sales@joyi-pack.com or use the inquiry form with your target styles and delivery address, and we will arrange dispatch, typically within a few working days after confirming the list.
What is the lead time?
For in-stock items we deliver within about 30 days of order confirmation and deposit. Non-stock and custom items follow the factory production schedule, and we confirm the specific timeline after you place the order. Full-colour printed orders add plate-making time, which we include in the quoted schedule up front. Sea freight to Western Europe then adds roughly 30 to 45 days in transit. Because timelines shift with season and capacity, treat the quoted lead time as the working plan and confirm a fixed date at order, especially ahead of peak holiday seasons.
Which countries do you ship to?
We ship primarily to the European Union and the United Kingdom, and we serve other international B2B markets on request. Standard terms are FOB, with DDP and DAP available for EU B2B buyers so that duty and VAT handling can be arranged per your preference. We do not operate overseas warehouses, so all goods dispatch from our Chinese plant by sea or air. Tell us the destination port or address and we will quote the workable Incoterm and transit window for your order, including any documentation needed for customs clearance at the destination.
Do you have warehouses in Europe or the US?
No. We do not operate warehouses or hold local stock in Europe or the United States. All orders are produced and shipped directly from our plant in China, either by sea freight, which is standard at roughly 30 to 45 days to Western Europe, or by air for urgent loads. This keeps pricing transparent and avoids minimum local-stock commitments. If you need faster replenishment, we can plan repeating shipments or split container deliveries to smooth your inventory cycle. Confirm your target market and we will propose a delivery rhythm that fits your sales volume.
Can I mix different sizes in one order or one container?
Yes. We support mixed-size and mixed-product consolidation within a single order and a single container, which helps smaller buyers test several formats without committing to one SKU’s full minimum. Compatible items from the same production line pack together efficiently, and we calculate carton and container load to maximise space. Mixing printed and blank items is possible if MOQs are met per design. Share your target assortment and quantities and we will propose a mix that meets each item’s minimum while filling the container cost-effectively and avoiding wasted capacity.
Are your products food-contact safe and third-party tested?
Yes. Our bagasse and plant-fibre products are intended for food contact and are third-party tested, with reports available on request. We maintain documentation such as declarations of compliance and migration test references for the relevant product lines and batches. We do not publish specific certificate numbers on the website, but we will share the applicable third-party test reports when you request them for tender, audit, or import purposes. For any market with particular food-contact rules, tell us early so we can confirm the right documentation package for your order before production begins.
Do you sell to individual consumers, or only to businesses?
Primarily to businesses. Our main model is B2B supply to restaurants, caterers, wholesalers, and importers, with wholesale pricing provided by inquiry. Selected in-stock ranges, including our Christmas tableware, are also available for direct online purchase at public prices without a wholesale account. If you are an individual buyer, those public-priced lines are the route; for ongoing or volume needs, apply for a wholesale account via the Contact page. We do not run a general retail shop, so most catalogue items are quoted per inquiry rather than listed with fixed prices.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept bank wire, T/T, as the standard method: typically 30% deposit to start production and 70% balance before shipment. For sample orders and smaller commitments we also accept PayPal, which suits first-time buyers and low-value shipments. Letter of Credit, L/C, is available for qualified container-order buyers. We do not take card payments directly on the site except on the public-priced lines that checkout with PayPal. Payment terms for long-term partners and large volumes are negotiable, so discuss your preferred structure with our team when you request the quotation for your order.
